Things to Know Before Your First Acupuncture Treatment:

  1. Health History:

    • Be ready to share your full medical history, including any current medications, allergies, and past treatments. This helps your acupuncturist create a safe and personalized plan for your care.

  2. Dress Comfortably:

    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas where needles will be inserted, such as your arms, legs, or back. If needed, your acupuncturist may provide a sheet.

  3. Avoid Heavy Meals or Caffeine:

    • Don’t eat a large meal before your appointment, but don’t come hungry either. A light meal a couple of hours before is ideal. Avoid caffeine, as it can interfere with relaxation during the session.

  4. Hydrate:

    • Stay hydrated before your treatment. hydration can improve the effects of acupuncture.

  5. No Alcohol:

    • Avoid alcohol before your session, as they can affect your body’s response to acupuncture.

  6. Communication is Key:

    • If you’re nervous about needles, or have a fear of them, let your acupuncturist know. They can adjust the technique and reassure you throughout the process.

    • If you feel any discomfort during treatment, such as sharp pain or significant discomfort, tell your practitioner right away so they can adjust the needles.

  7. Treatment Length:

    • Your first session may last between 60 and 90 minutes, including the consultation and actual treatment. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter, typically lasting 30 to 60 minutes.

  8. Frequency of Treatment:

    • For chronic or severe conditions, your acupuncturist might recommend multiple sessions over several weeks. For acute issues, fewer sessions may be necessary.

  9. Expect Mild Side Effects:

    • After your first treatment, it’s normal to feel a bit more relaxed or even fatigued. Some people experience mild bruising, soreness, or slight dizziness, but these effects are temporary and typically subside within a few hours.

  10. Contraindications:

  • If you are pregnant, let your acupuncturist know, as some acupuncture points should be avoided during pregnancy. Additionally, inform them if you have any bleeding disorders, are on blood-thinning medications, or have other specific health concerns.
